Jenő dr. Pap

University fencing master

I have been fencing since 1959. First I was a foil fencer in BVSC; between 1973-75 I was a member of the Hungarian national team. After that, I switched to epée.

My best results in epée: 1978 Hamburg WC team gold, 1982 Rome WC individual gold. My coaches were Árpád Nagy, dr. Csaba Pap and dr. Béla Bay.

From 1985 until 1990 I was a coach in Switzerland, acting as the coach of the national team and in the AFZ university fencing club. Anja Straub became world champion under my captaincy, and also the Swiss national team won the bronze medal. At the university (ETH Zurich), I taught fencing to 50-60 students per semester in three groups.

After 1990, I started competing as a veteran fencer. I won the European Championship and the World Championship, both individually and as a team. In 2015, I won the individual gold medal at the WC in Limoges.

After the death of Sándor Szomov, I took over the role of head coach at EVC (OSC back then). In 2024, I was appointed the Fencing Grand Master of ELTE University. Our club focuses on university fencing and youth training. Of course, we don't forget recreational fencers and veterans either.

I am glad that we can now prepare for competitions in proper conditions, with the most modern equipment.

István Ödön Szórády

Fencing trainer, weapons master

From 1971 to 1978 I was a foil fencer, and in the last year I fenced epée as well - successfully compared to the amount of training I did. After a 30-year break - university admission and studies, military service, work, second degree - I returned to the sport. I did athletics, sailing, horse riding, archery, but fencing was always special for me.

In the mid-1990s, clubs arose that not only trained elite athletes, but also provided opportunities for amateur, recreational and veteran fencers.

I picked up where I left off. I won 3 silver medals at the Veteran National Championship, 3 Szatmár Cups and many other medals, and I was also a member of the veteran national team.

László Vaja

Fencing trainer

I was born in 1986, I started dueling when I was ten years old. After a couple of years, I found myself under the wings of master coach István Lukovich within the walls of BSE (now MTK).

In 2011, I graduated from the University of Physical Education's secondary level fencing coach training. In addition to fencing, I tried to improve at the BSE training sessions, to learn from my master. From 2015, I became more and more involved in the life of the fencing hall. I was also able to take part in the renewal of the University Fencing Club, so for the past three years I have been training in EVC colors.

I first started working with veterans, and then from January 2024 I will also hold training for youth (sports school). I have two children, so youth training and parenting complement each other well.

I work full-time for an international company, so for me, teaching fencing is a place of relaxation and recharge, where I can fully do what I really love. If required, I can give training in English. In addition to dueling, if needed, I also teach dagger school.

Dóra Kasolyné Dékány

Fencing trainer

I have been working with children for 30 years as an educator. I first encountered fencing in my late teens.

Years later, after the birth of my three children, as recreational fencing became available, I started learning and practicing the basics of fencing with my children.

I attended training sessions diligently and, as a veteran athlete, started competing. Competing remains a part of my life to this day. At the request and encouragement of our department head, Dr. Jenő Pap, I obtained my fencing coach certification.

The leadership of the University Fencing Club entrusted me with the youth program, so I work with children. I strive to apply my 30 years of educational experience here as well.

Sport is excellent for children's development, helping with focus, teaching discipline, and adding structure to their daily routines. Fencing, in particular, develops them in a well-rounded way – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I've only been coaching for a few years, but I can confidently say that fencing has therapeutic effects even for children with attention deficit or hyperactivity. I love seeing young athletes arrive at training in good spirits and leave even happier, though tired, so I do my best to make every session fulfilling.

Endre Tóbel

Fencing trainer

From 1967 to 1969 I pentathlon in MAFC and fought in OSC. I won the individual Hungarian Champion title in dueling, and won several silver and bronze medals in the team. In 1973, I was a member of the silver medal winning team at the World University Championships and a member of the B team.

After obtaining my fencing coaching diploma, from 1978 I coached the OSC for many years, then I coached for more than 10 years in the Budapesti Honvéd SE. This was followed by the MTK from 2007-2013, and the Fless Fencing Association between 2013-2015. I have been working here since the establishment of the University Fencing Club.

My students won several OBs. They started at the age group EC and WC. I also have an international Fair Play prize student.

In the University Fencing Club, I would like to achieve that we have successful and successful fencers. I use my many decades of experience as a competitor and coach to work on every training session.

Fencing is eternal!
